On March 6th, the Franklin Lakes Fire Department took delivery of a new Rescue Truck manufactured by Pierce. This apparatus replaces their existing Rescue 337 which was over 25 years old. This process began 3 years ago and took the Truck Committee’s long term commitment to see it through to fruition.

Franklin Lakes has grown dramatically over the last quarter of a century, but the safety and security of residents is still provided for by an all volunteer force. While the long tradition in America of volunteer firefighters continues, serious challenges exist and the acquisition of the new rescue truck is a reassuring sign that the local volunteers in Franklin Lakes are prepared.

firetruckMany calls that the department responds to do not necessarily involve fire, and the new rescue truck will help in assuring a speedy response to those emergencies. This past winter’s numerous car wrecks exemplified the many life threatening emergencies volunteers answer to that do not involve fire. The new truck will provide the support required in those emergencies, as well as provide supplemental aid during the course of fighting fires. Franklin Lakes in particular is vulnerable in many areas where hydrants are blocks away and volunteers must stretch hose in freezing temperatures.

It takes a serious commitment of time in training to become a volunteer firefighter, and then continuing that training for new procedures and processes. Volunteers are also asked to devote to help raise money for the jobs they are not paid for but financially benefit the community. It is estimated that volunteer fire departments save states and municipalities close to 6 billion dollars a year.
